From Morecambe to Singapore: My G4D Tour Debut

From Morecambe to Singapore: my G4D Tour debut in February 2023, competing on an international stage and helping introduce others to disability golf.

In February 2023, my journey in disability golf took me from Morecambe to Singapore, where I made my G4D Tour debut at Laguna National Golf Resort Club.

Played on 6–7 February, the G4D Tour @ Singapore Classic was the circuit’s first event in Asia. Being part of that ten-player field was a significant milestone, particularly as I had only played my first EDGA tournament the previous June.

When I entered the PING Open for Golfers with a Disability in June 2022, I was stepping into an unfamiliar world. I have congenital hip dysplasia, but my disability isn’t immediately visible. Before that first event, I worried about whether I would fit in.

The welcome I received from the other players helped put those doubts to rest. EDGA opened up opportunities I hadn’t realised were available to me, including the chance to earn a world ranking and work towards competing on the G4D Tour.

Things moved quickly. In September 2022, I won the EDGA RSM Gross Series event at Stratford-on-Avon Golf Club. By the time I arrived in Singapore, I was ranked 17th in the World Ranking for Golfers with a Disability. Within my first seven months of EDGA competition, I had reached the world’s top 20.

Receiving that first G4D Tour invitation meant so much. It gave me the opportunity to compete against leading golfers with a disability on a course prepared for the DP World Tour. Ahead of the event, I described it as “living the dream” and that captured what the opportunity meant to me.

There was also an opportunity to contribute away from the competition. Alongside Kipp Popert, I helped with a golf clinic for guests from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore. The session formed part of two clinics organised during the event to introduce people with disabilities to golf.

Many of those taking part had never played before. It was a chance to help them discover the game and show the different ways they could enjoy it, whether socially or competitively.

Looking back, Singapore marks an important chapter in my golfing journey. Less than a year earlier, I had been unsure about entering my first disability golf event. Now I was competing internationally on the G4D Tour and helping introduce others to the sport.

For anyone with a disability who is unsure about getting involved, my experience offers a reason to take that first step. You don’t need to know where it will lead. My journey began by entering one tournament.
